Thomas Bird is a Beijing survivor. He has contributed to several guidebooks, including The Rough Guide To China. His writings on travel, culture and politics have been printed in a host of publications, including SCMP, Geographical Magazine, The New Statesman and The Guardian. He likes train travel, craft beer, and the teachings of Zhuangzi.
Thomas is the inspirational lead writer on several Make-Do China guides including Guilin: China’s Masterpiece and Dunhuang: A City on the Silk Road. His life ever mapped by the twin coordinates of Chatwin and Cobain, he currently lives in France while completing his epic travelogue of China by rail.
