About 1,400 species of birds have been found, including raptors, waders, waterfowl, land birds, climbing birds, and songbirds. Many of these are endemic to the vast country. Three of the eight migratory bird migration routes in the world pass through China. During the migration season, flocks of migratory birds regularly follow these courses to fly long distances between breeding and wintering areas.

About The Photographer

Li Yushan is one of the few specialist wild bird ecological photographers in China and has taken his camera all over this vast country from the Tibetan highlands to the deserts of Xinjiang and the snowy wastes of Northeast China. So as to capture the best images, he has endured many hardships including extreme temperatures; the snowy owl image in this calendar was captured at minus 42 degrees Celsius. In Yushan’s words, shooting wild birds is an uncontrollable process and every image has its story.
