From the page to the screen.
In 2024, Moongate Films was established in Hong Kong with the goal of bringing new stories from Asia to the world in both film and book formats. Moongate Films specializes in adapting literary novels into films, bringing stories from the page to the screen. Meanwhile, Moongate Books publishes translated fiction, especially from East Asia, and focuses on independent voices.
Our first feature film production, Hidden, is scheduled for release in 2025. Moongate Films have secured the exclusive adaptation rights to Chen Xiwo’s English PEN award-winning novel I Love My Mum, which caused a sensation after the Chinese edition was published in China and has since gone on to win rave reviews around the world.
Now through a collaboration with a talented team of film professionals, including young director Pamela Pan, and producer and cinematographer He Mu, we are getting ready to bring the film version Hidden to the screen.
Our compelling script is a murder case with an unthinkable secret at its heart. The unforgettable story of the love between a mother and her disabled son can be read as a metaphor for society’s unwillingness to confront hidden truths.
Moongate Films was established in 2024 in Hong Kong to bring Asian stories to the world in film format. The founders have a background in publishing, providing a wealth of engaging content ripe for adaptation.
Who are the team behind Moongate Films?
Moongate Films was established through a partnership between Hong Kong publisher Make-Do Publishing, headed by Harvey Thomlinson, and Shenzhen-based Coastal Star Films, represented by director and producer He Mu.
What kind of movies will we produce?
Our main focus will be on adapting literary works, drawing on our extensive experience in bringing Asian stories to global audiences.
What will be our first production?
Our first feature film will be Hidden, adapted from Chen Xiwo’s prize-winning novella I Love My Mum, which won an English PEN award after its English translation was published. Hidden is scheduled for release in 2025.
